December 12th, 2013 - I would really enjoy seeing you this winter at The Genesee Field House Dome to definitely help you improve your golf game. Practicing inside I have found can be very beneficial to a player because we do not get so worried about how are swing looks and how far the ball is going. It also is a great place for doing a digital video recording of your swing motion. We all must remember practice does not make perfect but "perfect practice will make perfect."

Wishing you all a very special Christmas and a great 2014 New Year!

*Range Ball Prices: Small $8.00 (65-Balls), Medium $10.00 (110-Balls), Large $15.00 (175-Balls)

March 1st, 2013 - I haven't braved a Michigan winter in the last 10 years and I see why. It sure has been a pretty cold 3 1/2 months. I stayed here in Michigan this winter to have a hip revision.  I'm waiting to get scheduled for surgery. There are a few requirements before the doctor will schedule me and one of those is to quit smoking.  That is a good thing but it has been a bit of a struggle. If you are looking to have a lesson indoors feel free to get in touch with me anytime at 810-845-5326.  I hope to see you this spring if not before.

News April 9th, 2012 - I'm back to Spring Meadows Country Club teaching. I arrived on March 1st, and I haven't seen a march like this in 20 yrs. Lets hope it continues. I'm happy to be back to Spring Meadows and I look forward to seeing the membership and meeting the many new members that have joined. Rates are the same as last year. I'm available Tuesday-Sunday.

This spring I have come out of retirement. I am coaching the Grand Blanc High School varsity golf team. I'm excited about the season. I have 9 young men who are very good students both on and off the course. Most importantly they excel academically and have great attitudes which comes first before golf skills. All in all I have 9 very talented golfers.

I'd like to thank Craig, the Superintendent at Spring Meadows, and his assistant Nathan for giving me the opportunity to work with the ground crew this summer. I get to enjoy the practice fairway and outstanding short game area. My second favorite thing to teaching the golf swing, is being able to work on the golf course.

Wishing you all the best,

News November 20th, 2011 - I received the following feedback from a proud parent:

I wanted to let you know that Bailey signed a NLI to play golf at Miami University, Oxford, OH yesterday. You have been a very big part of Bailey's career and I want you to share the success. Thank you for all that you have done for Bailey to get to this point. You have been a great supporter, instructor, coach and friend - without you this achievement would not have been possible. I know Bailey is thrilled that he can spend the last year of his high school golf career with you. My wish is for both of you to have the most fun you have ever had on the golf course this spring, the results really are secondary to the style in which he finishes his career at GB.
Again THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!!!!!!!!

Bailey Signing

Hello Truesdells, First let me say how proud I am of Bailey. I have had so much enjoyment watching him grow in to a young man. You as parents have to be proud that Bailey is exceptional in the class room. Now with that said, Bailey would make any University in the country better. He is first a student and then an athlete. He will be a wonderful student/athlete in college. Thank you for the kind words but I told Bailey since he was in elementary school the teacher doesn't make the player the player makes the teacher. So Bailey, thanks for helping me become a better teacher. Remember my friend, if your good you do not have to tell people your good. They will tell you that you are good! I am just glad I could give your son some guidance Mr. and Mrs. Truesdell!

Wishing you all the best in your journey,

Below is a letter that I received from a parent which is why I enjoy teaching this great game. I appreciate how well written this email is and it makes what I do worth doing. I can only tell you this makes my day every time I read the email.

Hi Rick,

This morning, Sunday September 4th, there was a terrific article on the Grand Blanc Girls Golf Team. Within the article, Anna-Marie gave you a lot of credit for any success she might have. Anna mentioned how dedicated you have been since she was eight years old in developing her skills and confidence to play golf. She inferred how loyal you have been to her, and "one of the most influential people in her life."

Well, Anna-Marie is now in her senior year of high school. Kids sure grow up fast. I often reflect a lot on how you took her under your wing at Loch Lomond and not only showed her the golf swing, but developed her emotionally for a tough game. Your encouragement, positive approach, and genuine concern for her has been your hallmark. I hope you know how much I appreciate your efforts as well.

It's a tough job parenting these days. There is a fine line between, inviting, guiding, offering opportunities, and pushing your child. I have worked at raising Anna to be knowledgeable and independent. At times I urged Anna to get a lesson from you, but always made it her decision. Lately, she has simply called you on her own, and driven to Spring Meadows independently. She has now taken ownership and responsibility for her own game.

So, thanks Rick! You are not simply the "swing coach." You are a dear, respected friend. Your passion for golf has inspired Anna. Hopefully, you are proud of her.

God bless,

Joe Gainey

July 27th, 2011 - Hello everyone! This is just a short up date of the golf season here in Michigan. After one of the worst springs I can remember in many years, June & July have been wonderful. My lessons tee has been really busy and June was a lot of fun. My friends, the Gardner's were here for several weeks. I had the pleasure of working with Greysen on his golf game. Greysen's parents Greg & Pam were here enjoying our great weather in Michigan and playing some real nice golf courses. Greysen played in two Top 50 Junior tournaments and finished first in both tournaments. Hopefully he is still practicing with a purpose back in Hobe Sound, Fl.

I am really looking forward to the A.G.J.A. Randy Wise Buick Junior tournament at Warwick Hills C.C. on August 22, 2011. If you are in the area on August 23, 2011 I will be doing a Trick Shot Exhibition on the driving range at 6:00pm. Some of the best junior amateurs in the country will be here, so feel free to come out and watch. The summer is going fast. If you need some help with your golf game just give me a call on my cell at 810.845.5326. I know I can help you get better. If you think you can not get better, I guarantee you will not. I hope you all play well and have fun the rest of the summer!

Elements of Change: "Apply this to your golf game if you would like to get better"
By Chris Widener

The key to achieving more than you currently are, no matter which area of your life or work you are focusing on now, is change. The old saying rings true: If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you've already got. If you keep eating and exercising the way you currently are, you will weigh the same a year from now. If you continue to sell to the same people on the same schedule, you will make the same amount of money next year. In order to move forward, we must change.

As I have worked with people, both in a professional setting and on a personal basis, I have found two things to be true about change. One, it is simple. Two, it is not easy. That is, the concept of change is simple to grasp. People or organizations are quick to say, "Oh, I know we need to change." Simple.

But where the problem starts, and why most people and organizations do not change, is because it is not easy to change. But, I believe, if the process is well thought out, and if we have the guts and determination to carry it out, change can happen, and we can move on to more fulfilled lives.

With that said, let me give you what I consider the elements of change.

Discontentment with your current state. The first step in the process of change is to not want to be where you currently are. You must be discontent with it. If you are overweight, you must say, "I will not accept this anymore." If you are in debt, you must say, "I cannot tolerate this any longer." If you have broken relationships, you must say, "I will not live with this." This is a decision to change and not accept the status quo.

The picture of your preferred outcome. What is it that you want to change to? It absolutely is not enough to say "I need to change." It must be: "I am going to change to..." This becomes the goal. I would encourage you to get a mental picture of it formulated in your mind. Get a real picture of it if it is that tangible. Perhaps write yourself a short essay, extolling the virtues of what life will be like when you get to the changed state.

New associations with the two states. You must begin to associate your current state you are in with pain, and the state you want to be in with pleasure. Let's take weight for example. We tend to think of ice cream, mounds of it, with pleasure. I know that I do. Especially chocolate chip mint. One night we went to a friend's house and we had some ice cream. Normal portions. I don't like to eat normal portions. I like huge portions of ice cream. There is an association of pleasure there. But what I did to overcome the urge to eat scoop after scoop was to associate huge portions to being overweight, not the pleasure of the taste. I also associated not eating the ice cream with feeling better about myself. Then when it comes to exercise, I work on associating the exercise and weight-lifting with the pleasure of fitting into my clothes rather than the pain my muscles feel every time I do it. This helped me win the battle of the mind.

Develop a plan of short, simple steps. "I am going to lose fifty pounds in two months." "I will sell 500% more next month." These are examples of change that are good goals to have long term, but too big for the time allotted-and this plays havoc on change! If your goals are too big in too short of time, you will fail and become discouraged. Then you will quit and decide change can't be accomplished. Instead, you must have short, workable, attainable goals if you are going to see real change happen and stay. "I am going to lose five pounds a month for ten months." "We are going to sell 6% more each month this year." These are the size steps you need to take. Then you will build victory after victory.

Discipline yourself. Sorry, but this is where it is up to you. At the heart of change is the ability to discipline ourselves. I cannot lose your weight. Your mom cannot go out and make sales calls for you. The only real obstacle standing between your current state and your desired outcome is you! So do everything you can to get yourself motivated to change! Force yourself to get out of bed and get to work on your goals! Discipline yourself. Choose to make the right decision.

Reward yourself when you have made the change. That's right: reward yourself. You have worked hard and exerted a lot of self-discipline to get there! You deserve it!
